Pisew Falls Provincial Park: Manitoba's Hissing Lynx

Pisew Falls Provincial Park is a natural gem in northern Manitoba, approximately 700 km north of Winnipeg. The park's centerpiece, Pisew Falls, is a 13-meter (43-foot) cascade on the Grass River. The name 'Pisew' comes from the local Cree word for 'lynx,' inspired by the hissing sound of the water resembling the wild cat.The falls were formed by intense geological activity hundreds of thousands of years ago, creating a fault and upheaval in the landscape. This geological event left a rift through which the Grass River now surges.Visitors can experience the falls from two viewpoints. A short, easy 5-minute walk from the parking lot leads to boardwalks with unobstructed views. A 0.5 km walk leads to a Rotary suspension bridge over the Grass River, providing access to a viewpoint at the top of the falls. Caution is advised as there are no railings and the rocks can be slippery.For adventurous hikers, the park offers a challenging 22 km (13 mile) round-trip trail to Kwasitchewan Falls, Manitoba's highest waterfall. This backcountry trail is recommended for experienced backpackers due to its rugged terrain.The area around Pisew Falls has a unique microclimate due to the constant flow of water. This supports a variety of mosses, lichens, fungi, and ferns, some dating back to before the last Ice Age. In winter, ice builds up on a small island downstream, creating a spectacle where otters are often seen sliding.Camping is not permitted directly at Pisew Falls, but designated campsites are available above Kwasitchewan Falls. These sites offer scenic views and access to open-air toilets.
