The Lieu Historique National de la Bataille-de-la-Châteauguay commemorates the Battle of the Châteauguay, a significant event in the War of 1812. On October 26, 1813, approximately 300 Canadian soldiers, including Voltigeurs, Fencibles, elite militia, and Indigenous allies, led by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles-Michel de Salaberry, successfully stopped an American force of around 4,000 from advancing on Montreal. This victory was crucial in preventing the Americans from capturing Montreal and thwarting a major invasion plan. The site itself, located on the north shore of the Châteauguay River, offers visitors a chance to step back in time and learn about the battle's history. While the interpretation center is currently closed, the outdoor site remains open for self-guided exploration. Visitors can view a commemorative plaque installed in 1978 and admire the obelisk erected in 1895 by the Canadian Parliament. The grounds provide a tranquil setting for picnics and reflection, with interpretive panels offering insights into the battle. A marked circuit of the battlefield can be followed by car or bicycle. The Battle of the Châteauguay is remembered for the innovative strategies and tactics employed by the Canadian forces. De Salaberry prepared a defensive position at a bend in the Châteauguay River, complete with a barricade. By using methods of deception, such as sounding bugle calls and yelling to create the illusion of a larger force, the smaller Canadian contingent successfully deterred the American advance.
