Discover more about Lieu historique national du Fort-Lennox

Fort Lennox National Historic Site, situated on Île aux Noix in the Richelieu River, is a captivating journey into Canada's military past. The island's strategic location made it a key point of defense against invasions from the south, leading to its fortification by the French in 1759. The British captured it shortly after, and later, American forces occupied it briefly in 1775. The current fort, built by the British between 1819 and 1829, stands as a testament to their efforts to deter American incursions after the War of 1812. Visitors can explore the well-preserved stonework buildings and defensive structures, including a moat that surrounds the ramparts. The site offers guided tours that highlight the fort's history, strategic importance, and architectural features. You can learn about the lives of the officers, soldiers, and their families who once resided within the fort's walls. The newly renovated barracks feature an exhibit called "Passages, experiences of this Island". Île aux Noix also offers natural beauty, with large green spaces perfect for strolling, bird watching, or picnicking. Note that there are no food services on site, so bringing your own refreshments is recommended. From June 20 to September 2, 2025, admission to the site is free, but ferry fees still apply.
