4.7

Brock's Monument, located in Queenston Heights Park in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, is a towering tribute to Major General Sir Isaac Brock, a British military commander who played a pivotal role in the War of 1812. The monument stands on the site of the Battle of Queenston Heights, where Brock lost his life in October 1812 while leading his troops against an invading American force. He is considered a founding hero of Upper Canada. The first monument to Brock was erected in 1824 but was damaged by an explosion in 1840. The current monument, completed in 1859, is a 56-meter (185 feet) Neoclassical structure designed by William Thomas. It is made of Queenston limestone and features a statue of Brock atop a fluted column. Visitors can climb the 235 steps of the interior staircase to reach the observation deck, which offers stunning views of the Niagara River, surrounding parkland, and Lake Ontario. Inside the monument, exhibits detail Brock's life, the Battle of Queenston Heights, and the monument's history. The bodies of Brock and his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Colonel John Macdonell, are interred in a crypt beneath the monument. Queenston Heights Park, where Brock's Monument is located, is maintained year-round by the Niagara Parks Commission. Visitors can explore the battlefield with costumed staff, visit a small museum, and enjoy the well-maintained gardens and scenic views. The park also features a restaurant.
