Discover more about Port Credit Lighthouse

The Port Credit Lighthouse is more than just a structure; it's a landmark that embodies the spirit of this vibrant waterfront community. The current lighthouse, built in 1991, is a replica of the original 1882 lighthouse, which replaced an earlier one built in 1863 by Fredrick Chase Capreol. Capreol, an English businessman, built the first lighthouse to attract business to the harbor. The 1882 lighthouse played a significant role in Port Credit's history, including serving as a staging point for a shipwreck rescue in 1900. Unfortunately, a 1908 flood separated the lighthouse from the mainland, and it was eventually decommissioned in 1918. The abandoned wooden lighthouse was destroyed by fire in 1936. The modern lighthouse stands on the western bank of the Port Credit Harbour, offering panoramic views of the Credit River, Lake Ontario, and the bustling marina. Visitors can explore the lighthouse grounds, enjoy the waterfront trails, and soak in the lively atmosphere of Port Credit. The lighthouse also houses the Port Credit Business Improvement Association (BIA) and functions as a Region of Peel pumping station. The area surrounding the lighthouse is a hub of activity, with numerous shops, restaurants, and parks within walking distance. Nearby attractions include Port Credit Memorial Park and J.C. Saddington Park, offering picnic areas, playgrounds, and scenic vistas. The lighthouse is also a focal point for many of Port Credit's annual festivals and events, such as Ribfest and the Southside Shuffle Blues and Jazz Festival. Whether you're interested in history, photography, or simply enjoying a relaxing day by the lake, the Port Credit Lighthouse is a must-see destination. Its iconic red and white exterior, coupled with its stunning waterfront location, makes it a memorable experience for all who visit.
