Discover more about Whirlpool River Park

Whirlpool River Park, located north of Niagara Falls in Niagara, New York, is a 109-acre state park offering visitors a unique vantage point to witness the raw power of nature. The park overlooks the Niagara Whirlpool, a natural phenomenon where the Niagara River rapidly swirls and churns. This mesmerizing vortex is created by the river's abrupt turn and the narrowness of the gorge, resulting in some of the wildest rapids in North America. The park's formation dates back approximately 4,200 years when the Niagara Escarpment eroded upstream, causing the Niagara River to intersect with an ancient pre-glacial river bed. This intersection led to the rapid washing away of loose sediment and rock, creating the whirlpool we see today.Whirlpool River Park features several scenic overlooks that provide panoramic views of the whirlpool and the Niagara Gorge. Visitors can explore the park's trails, including the Niagara Gorge Rim Trail, which offers stunning vistas of the Niagara River. For a more immersive experience, a stone staircase descends into the gorge, providing access to the Whirlpool Rapids Trail along the river's edge. Please note that some trails may be temporarily closed due to fallen rocks and unstable conditions.Beyond the whirlpool itself, the park offers picnic facilities, a playground, and a nature room, making it an ideal destination for families and nature enthusiasts. Fishing is also permitted in the river. The park is open year-round, from dawn to dusk, providing opportunities to witness the changing beauty of the Niagara Gorge in every season.
