Located at the corner of Elgin and Albert streets, right outside Canada's National Arts Centre in Ottawa, the statue captures the spirit and virtuosity of Oscar Peterson, a pianist who left an indelible mark on the world of jazz.Unveiled on June 30, 2010, by Queen Elizabeth II, the statue depicts Peterson seated at his piano, smiling as if he has just finished playing and turned to acknowledge his audience. The statue is designed to be interactive, with space for visitors to sit next to the bronze figure, creating a moment of connection with the artist. Ruth Abernethy, the Canadian sculptor, intentionally made the statue accessible, allowing people to experience a personal moment with Oscar.The piano features 97 keys instead of the standard 88, inspired by an Austrian piano favored by Peterson; Abernethy included the extra keys as a metaphor for his musical inventiveness. The statue serves as a beloved landmark in Ottawa, drawing music lovers of all ages. It provides a space for people to pay homage to Peterson's legacy and appreciate his contributions to Canadian culture.
