Deming Park: Terre Haute's Green Oasis

Deming Park, a sprawling 177-acre green space on Terre Haute's east side, has been a beloved community hub since 1921. Conceived by landscape architect George Kessler, the park was designed as a retreat from the city's busy streets and dense housing, offering open space and fresh air to residents. Demas Deming Jr. sold the land to the city in 1921 for $155,000, and then donated $100,000 of the proceeds to the Rose Polytechnic Institute and the remaining $55,000 to improve Ohio Boulevard, creating a scenic entrance to the park.The park boasts a variety of attractions, including the Oakley Playground, the Clark-Landsbaum Holly Arboretum, and an 18-hole disc golf course. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy basketball and tennis courts, as well as soccer and softball fields. The Torner Center, located in the heart of the park, hosts community activities, classes, camps, and special events throughout the year.Deming Park's landscape is reminiscent of the Lost Creek Settlement, featuring rolling hills, lush wooded areas, and two tranquil lakes. Visitors can explore curvilinear paths and native plants, as well as admire the fieldstone fencing, fish ponds, and a stone bridge constructed by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. A miniature train offers rides for children, while picnic shelters provide space for gatherings.Throughout its history, Deming Park has adapted to the changing needs of the community. A former "comfort station" was converted into a park office and later a residence, and a zoo operated on the grounds from the 1930s until 1976. Today, Deming Park continues to be a popular destination for recreation, relaxation, and community engagement.
