Discover more about Point Prim Lighthouse

Point Prim Lighthouse, standing proudly at the tip of Point Prim, is more than just a scenic landmark; it's a vital piece of Prince Edward Island's heritage. Erected in 1845, it holds the distinction of being the island's oldest lighthouse and one of the few circular brick lighthouses in Canada. Its construction marked a significant step in aiding navigation and trade in the region, especially for ships approaching Charlottetown Harbour. The lighthouse was designed by Isaac Smith, a prominent architect who also designed Province House in Charlottetown. Originally intended to be a wooden structure, the Legislative Assembly opted for brick to better withstand the harsh maritime environment. The tower stands 18.5 meters (60.7 feet) tall and is built of brick, though the exterior was shingled with wood just two years after construction to combat the deteriorating effects of the weather. The brickwork can still be viewed from the interior. Visitors can explore the lighthouse and climb to the top for panoramic views of the Northumberland Strait and Hillsborough Bay. The site includes a gift shop in the Keeper's Cottage, offering souvenirs and local crafts. Historical displays and guided tours provide insights into the lighthouse's history and its role in the island's maritime past. The grounds also offer amenities such as picnic tables and accessible washrooms, making it a family-friendly destination. Point Prim Lighthouse is not only a historical landmark but also a symbol of community and resilience. It has been recognized as a heritage place under the Prince Edward Island Heritage Places Protection Act. The Belfast Community Development Corporation currently leases the lighthouse from the Canadian Coast Guard.
