Discover more about Skmaqn–Port-la-Joye–Fort Amherst National Historic Site

Skmaqn–Port-la-Joye–Fort Amherst National Historic Site, located in Rocky Point, Prince Edward Island, offers a captivating glimpse into the island's rich and complex history. Originally established by the French in 1720, it commemorates the first permanent European settlement on Île Saint-Jean, now known as Prince Edward Island. The site has significant importance for the Mi'kmaq, Acadian, French, and British communities, due to the events that took place here between 1720 and 1768 which helped shape the future of Prince Edward Island. Skmaqn, meaning "waiting place", served as a gathering place for centuries due to its strategic location as a gateway to the Island. From 1720 to 1770, it was the seat of government and port of entry for settlers under both French and British control. The site was also where the Mi'kmaq and French leaders renewed their close relationship, celebrated annually with speeches, gifting, and feasting. Following the British capture in 1758, it became the site of a major deportation of French and Acadian settlers. Today, visitors can explore the grassy ruins of the fort, wander along the extensive trail system, and enjoy panoramic views of Charlottetown Harbour. Interpretive panels in English, French, and Mi'kmaw share the stories of the four distinct cultures that shaped the site. Special events, such as the Acadian National Feast Day in mid-August and Acadian Remembrance Day in mid-December, provide opportunities to commemorate the site's history.
