Artillery Park: A Bastion of History in Québec City

Explore centuries of military history at Artillery Park, a National Historic Site in the heart of Old Québec.

4.5

Artillery Park, a National Historic Site within the Fortifications of Québec, offers a captivating journey through centuries of military and social history. Strategically positioned along the Old Upper Town walls, the site was initially chosen by the French in the 17th and 18th centuries for its defensive advantages against potential enemy attacks via the Saint-Charles River and the plateau west of Québec City. Over time, Artillery Park evolved into a garrison, serving as the headquarters for the British Royal Artillery Regiment until the late 19th century. Notably, from 1879 until 1964, it housed a cartridge factory that produced ammunition for the Canadian Army. Today, visitors can explore three fully restored historical buildings: the Arsenal Foundry, the Dauphine Redoubt, and the Officers' Quarters. The Arsenal Foundry features exhibits about Québec's military and industrial past, including a large scale model of Québec City as it appeared in 1808. The Dauphine Redoubt, dating back to 1712, is one of the oldest military buildings in North America. Costumed guides share stories of the French, British, and Canadian soldiers who resided within its walls. The Officers' Quarters showcases the refined life of British officers and their families in the 1830s. Artillery Park provides a glimpse into the lives of soldiers through interactive exhibits and restored rooms, offering both guided and self-guided tours. Visitors can stroll through the gardens, view antique furnishings, and, during the summer, witness musket-shooting demonstrations and tea ceremonies.
