Discover more about Place Royale

Place Royale, often referred to as the "cradle of French civilization in America," is a historic square that embodies the soul of Québec City. It all began in 1608 when Samuel de Champlain, a French explorer, established a permanent French settlement here, strategically located where the St. Lawrence River meets the Rivière Saint-Charles. This marked the beginning of French colonization in North America. For over two centuries, Place Royale thrived as the town's main marketplace and center for business activity. The square witnessed its share of trials, including a devastating fire in 1682 that led to the construction of new stone buildings, which defined the square's architectural style. In 1686, it was named in honor of King Louis XIV. The square suffered significant damage during the 1759 Battle of the Plains of Abraham. In the mid-20th century, a major revitalization project restored Place Royale to its original French colonial character. Today, visitors can explore landmarks such as the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church, the oldest stone church in North America, built in 1688. They can also see the outline of Samuel de Champlain's second home near the church. The square also features a bust of Louis XIV, a replica of the original. Place Royale is more than just a square; it's a living museum where the past comes alive. It invites visitors to step back in time and experience the atmosphere of 17th-century New France.
