Originally constructed in 1926 by real estate magnate Francis Nicholson Darke for his wife, Annie, the castle was a response to her fear following the devastating 1912 cyclone that damaged their previous home. Annie desired a fortress, and Francis delivered, creating a solid stone structure designed to withstand anything Mother Nature could throw at it.The castle's design and construction are noteworthy. Darke, sparing no expense, imported the same limestone used for the Regina Legislative Building, a decision unheard of at the time for a private residence. The castle featured a stone roof and even a bomb shelter in the basement, reflecting Darke's commitment to Annie's safety and peace of mind.After Annie's death in 1964, the castle fell into disrepair until its current owner, Jason Hall, undertook a significant restoration and transformation. Hall reimagined the interior as a medieval castle, filling it with an impressive collection of 17th-century European art, tapestries, and furniture. Visitors can now experience a slice of medieval Europe in the Canadian Prairies, with guided tours available daily.
