McBeth House Centre and Park Trail: A Glimpse into Winnipeg's Past

The McBeth House Centre and Park Trail offers a unique blend of historical insight and natural beauty in Winnipeg's Rivergrove neighborhood. The focal point is the McBeth House itself, a Edwardian-style brick dwelling constructed in 1912-1913. This stately home stands as a testament to the McBeth family, who played a significant role in the early European settlement of Manitoba.The McBeth family's connection to the land dates back to the early 1800s, when Alexander McBeath (later McBeth) arrived as part of Lord Selkirk's Red River Colony. The family continuously occupied their river lot for approximately 170 years, initially farming the land and later establishing a store and other businesses. Robert McBeth Jr., a grandson of Alexander, built the current McBeth House, a dignified brick house, close to the family's 1852 log home. The house is a commanding and exemplary early twentieth-century upper-class home tied to the roots of European settlement in Manitoba through Lord Selkirk's Red River Colony.Today, the McBeth House functions as a seniors' center. The surrounding park area includes a section of the Brooks Trail, a pleasant 0.8 km trail that skirts the Red River and weaves through a lovely greenspace bordering the upscale suburb of Rivergrove. The trail, named after Scott Brooks, features scenic overlooks, decorative benches, and footbridges, and is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. Along the trail, visitors can also observe a tall grass prairie restoration site and a river bottom forest with some of Winnipeg's largest cottonwood trees.
