Car
If you are driving from Santiago, take Route 5 Sur (Pan-American Highway) south towards San José de Maipo. Once you reach San José de Maipo, follow the signs to the 'Embalse El Yeso' road. Continue on this road for approximately 20 kilometers until you reach the entrance to the San Francisco Glacier area. Note that the road can be narrow and winding, so drive with caution.
Public Transportation
From Santiago, take a bus from the Terminal San Borja to San José de Maipo. Buses run regularly and the journey takes about 1-1.5 hours. Once you arrive in San José de Maipo, you will need to arrange for a taxi or local transport to take you to the 'Embalse El Yeso' area, as public transportation does not go directly to the glacier. The taxi ride should cost around CLP 15,000-20,000.
Hiking
Once you arrive at the 'Embalse El Yeso' area, you will need to hike to reach the San Francisco Glacier. There are marked trails leading to the glacier, and the hike can take approximately 4-6 hours depending on your pace and the specific trail you choose. Make sure to have proper hiking gear, sufficient water, and snacks for the journey.
