If you are traveling by car, start by taking Route 5 (Pan-American Highway) in the direction of La Serena. Continue on Route 5 for approximately 400 km from Santiago. Once you reach La Serena, take the exit towards Route D-41, heading east towards Vicuña. Follow Route D-41 for about 25 km until you reach the town of Vicuña. From Vicuña, follow signs to the Elqui Valley and the Elqui River, which is approximately 10 km further into the valley.
Public Transportation
To reach the Elqui River using public transportation, first, take a bus from Santiago to La Serena. Several bus companies operate this route, including Turbus and Pullman. The journey takes around 6-7 hours and costs approximately CLP 15,000-25,000 (depending on the company and class of service). Upon arrival in La Serena, transfer to a local bus heading to Vicuña. This trip takes about 1 hour and costs around CLP 3,000-5,000. Once in Vicuña, you can either walk or take a taxi to the Elqui River, which is about 10 km away.

If you prefer a more direct route after arriving in Vicuña, consider taking a taxi or using a rideshare app. Taxis are available in Vicuña and can take you directly to the Elqui River. The fare may range from CLP 10,000 to CLP 15,000, depending on your starting point within Vicuña.
