Discover more about Panteón Hill

Panteón Hill, aptly named after the Spanish word for Pantheon or Cemetery, is a prominent geographical feature in Valparaíso, Chile. This hill is home to three significant cemeteries: Cemetery No. 1, the Dissidents Cemetery, and Cemetery No. 2. In the early 19th century, the deceased were buried on hilltops or washed away in the ocean, causing a public health crisis. In 1825, the government purchased land to establish a cemetery on Panteón Hill. Cemetery No. 1, initially established by Catholics, received support from British immigrants who helped create the Dissidents Cemetery for non-Catholics. Cemetery No. 2 was established in 1848. Cemetery No. 1, declared a National Monument of Chile in 2005, features a Neo-classical portico entrance designed in 1922 by Swiss architect Augusto Geiger. Adorned with Doric columns, the entrance houses a replica of Michelangelo's Pietà. The cemetery showcases diverse architectural styles, including Neo-gothic and Neo-classical elements, with stained glass artworks. The Dissidents Cemetery, founded in 1825, served as the resting place for non-Catholics, especially British and other European residents. Religious discrimination in municipal cemeteries was abolished in 1883. Throughout its history, the cemeteries on Panteón Hill have faced challenges, including damage from earthquakes. Renovations in 2011 included the addition of the 'Plaza of the Immigrant,' further enriching the hill's cultural significance. Today, Panteón Hill serves as a serene escape, offering panoramic views of the bustling port city.
