Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Santiago, take the Metrobus MB-72 to Baños Morales from the Bellavista de la Florida Metrobus Terminal. From Baños Morales, the trailhead is located west of the village, crossing the bridge over the Morales River. A Conaf post is located a bit farther upwards, where you pay the entrance fee. The bus fare is approximately $2-$3 USD. Check Metrobus MB-72 schedule for current times.

  • Driving

    From Santiago, drive southeast on Route G-25 towards Cajón del Maipo. Continue past San José de Maipo, San Alfonso, and San Gabriel until you reach Baños Morales. The drive is approximately 93 km and takes around 1.5-2 hours. Once in Baños Morales, park your vehicle and proceed to the trailhead west of the village, crossing the bridge over the Morales River. Parking is limited, especially during peak season. There may be a parking fee of a few dollars. Note that during winter, road closures are possible due to snow.

Situated approximately 93 kilometers from Santiago, this natural monument offers an escape into the heart of the Andes Mountains. The monument spans over 3,000 hectares and was established in 1974 to protect the area's unique geological features and diverse flora and fauna. The main attraction is the trek to Laguna Morales, a beautiful lake nestled in a glacial basin. The trail begins in Baños Morales, a small mountain village at 1,900 meters above sea level, and winds through a glacial valley. The 10-kilometer round-trip hike is considered accessible to hikers of all levels, with a steady ascent and well-marked path. Along the way, hikers can witness the stunning geology of the area, including mountains shaped by ancient glaciers and moraines. After about two to three hours of trekking, hikers reach Laguna Morales, where the San Francisco Glacier looms in the background. The turquoise waters of the lagoon reflect the surrounding peaks, creating a stunning panorama. The hanging glacier El Morado is located in the Arenas park, at a height of 3200 meters. The area is also ideal for mountaineering, with opportunities to climb peaks such as Rubilias, Chacayes, and El Morado itself. The best time to visit El Morado Natural Monument is during the spring and summer months (October to April) when the weather is more stable. During winter (May to September), the park is often closed due to heavy snow.
