Know before you go
Hi, I'm Eve. Here are a few practical things to know before exploring El Tatio.
- Arrive early (around sunrise) to witness the geysers at their most active, when the contrast between the cold air and hot steam creates the most dramatic effect.
- Dress warmly in layers, as temperatures can be below freezing in the early morning, even in summer.
- Acclimatize to the altitude in San Pedro de Atacama for a day or two before visiting El Tatio to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.
- Bring cash (Chilean pesos) for the entrance fee, as credit cards are not accepted at the entrance.
- Stay on marked trails to avoid falling into the hot springs, as the ground can be unstable in some areas.
