Discover more about Baburizza Palace

Perched atop Cerro Alegre, the Baburizza Palace is a feast for the eyes and a portal into Valparaíso's prosperous history. Built in 1916 by Italian architects Arnaldo Barison and Renato Schiavon for the Zanelli family, the palace later became the residence of Pascual Baburizza, a Croatian businessman who made his fortune in saltpeter. His passion for art led him to acquire numerous European works, which now form part of the museum's collection. The palace's architecture is a blend of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Modernist styles, featuring towers, columns, balconies, and terraces. Inside, a carved wooden door coated in copper welcomes visitors, while the dining room boasts a Renaissance-style marble fireplace. The museum's collection includes works by Chilean masters such as Juan Francisco González, Pedro Lira, and Alfredo Valenzuela Puelma, alongside European artists like Eugene Lous Boudin and Felix Ziem. In 1971, the Valparaíso municipality acquired the palace and transformed it into the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts. After undergoing extensive renovations, the museum reopened in 2011, preserving the palace's architectural details while creating spaces for exhibitions. A visit to the Baburizza Palace offers a unique opportunity to appreciate art, architecture, and the history of Valparaíso, a UNESCO World Heritage city.
