The Museo de Historia Natural de Valparaíso (MHNV) invites visitors to explore the natural history of the Valparaíso region and beyond. Established in 1878, the museum has evolved into a dynamic center for understanding and appreciating Chile's biodiversity. The museum's home, the Palacio Lyon, is a national monument, built in the 1880s in the Victorian style. The Palacio Lyon survived the earthquake of 1906 that devastated much of Valparaíso. The museum has been located in the Palacio Lyon since 1988. The permanent exhibition, "Biodiversity in the Valparaíso Region," guides visitors through the area's ecosystems, including the sea, coast, oceanic islands, the Aconcagua River, La Campana National Park, and the central valley. The museum's collection comprises around 60,000 objects, including land and sea vertebrates, mollusks, gastropods, geological samples, fossils, and an important botanical collection. A highlight is the collection of four mummies from the indigenous Chinchorro people of northern Chile. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and offers guided tours.
