The Decorative Arts Museum Rioja Palace, located in the heart of Viña del Mar, is a stunning example of French-inspired architecture and a window into Chile's opulent past. Built between 1907 and 1912, the palace served as the residence of businessman Fernando Rioja and his family until 1956. The architects Alfredo Azancot and Arnaldo Barison drew inspiration from French and Italian palaces, blending elements from different eras and styles. The museum was established in 1979 to preserve the historical and artistic heritage of the palace. In 1985, the building, park, and collection were designated as a National Historical Monument. The palace provides insight into the styles and techniques used by architects and designers to decorate upper-class homes in the early 20th century. Inside, visitors can explore rooms furnished with period-correct furniture and decorated with excellent artworks. The museum features an eclectic mix of styles, including Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassicism. The gardens surrounding the palace feature various species of palm trees and beautiful trees such as the cockspur coral tree. The palace suffered significant damage during the 1985 earthquake, but was meticulously restored. Today, it stands as a cultural center and museum, hosting receptions and official activities.
