Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car within Catatumbo, start from the town center. Head northwest on Calle 1 until you reach the intersection with Carrera 5. Turn left onto Carrera 5. Continue on this road as it merges into the main highway leading out of Catatumbo. Follow the signs for Zulia, Venezuela, as you approach the border. The drive to Rio Catatumbo will take you approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Once you reach the border, be prepared for border control checks. After crossing into Venezuela, continue to follow the signs for Rio Catatumbo. The river is located just a few kilometers from the border.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Rio Catatumbo using public transportation, start at the central bus station in Catatumbo. Look for buses headed toward Zulia, Venezuela. The fare is typically around 20,000 COP (Colombian Pesos). The journey will take approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on the bus schedule and traffic. Once you arrive at the nearest bus terminal in Zulia, you can take a local taxi to the Rio Catatumbo area. Taxi fares from the terminal to the river location can range from 10,000 to 15,000 VES (Venezuelan Bolivares). Make sure to negotiate the fare before starting your trip.

• Combination (Car + Boat)

  For a more adventurous route, you can rent a car to travel to a nearby port on the shores of the Catatumbo River. From Catatumbo, head towards the town of La Villa, which is about a 1-hour drive. Once at La Villa, you can hire a local boat to take you directly to Rio Catatumbo. The boat ride will take about 30 minutes. Expect to pay around 50,000 VES for the boat hire. This option allows you to experience the scenic beauty of the river as you approach your destination.
