Car
If you're traveling by car, start by heading towards the coastal city of Buenaventura. From major cities like Cali or Pereira, take the Pan-American Highway (Route 25) towards Buenaventura. The drive from Cali takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, while from Pereira it takes about 3 to 4 hours. Once in Buenaventura, you will need to find a port where boats to Malpelo Island operate. It is advisable to contact local tour operators in advance to ensure availability and schedules.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus to Buenaventura from your location. Buses frequently depart from Cali and Pereira, and the journey takes around 3 to 4 hours. Once you arrive at the Buenaventura bus terminal, locate a taxi or local transport to the port area. Again, it’s recommended to contact local operators to book a boat trip to Malpelo Island, as these trips can be infrequent and may require advance reservations.
Boat
After reaching Buenaventura, you will board a boat to Malpelo Island. Ensure you have arranged this part of the journey ahead of time with a local tour operator. The boat trip can take anywhere from 10 to 16 hours depending on sea conditions. It's important to note that the cost of the boat trip can vary; expect to pay between $200 to $400 USD for a round trip, including equipment if you are diving.
