Discover more about Our Lady of Poverty Cathedral, Pereira

The Our Lady of Poverty Cathedral, or Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Pobreza, is the main church of the Diocese of Pereira and a defining symbol of the city. Its history is intertwined with the very foundations of Pereira, as it stands on the grounds of the old church of Cartago, dating back to 1540. The original structure, completed in 1890, was significantly damaged by the 1906 earthquake and later rebuilt. The cathedral suffered further damage in 1999, leading to a three-year reconstruction period during which archaeological remains of the first settlers were discovered. The cathedral's architecture showcases a blend of neo-Gothic and Byzantine styles. Inside, exposed brick walls are adorned with mosaics, while the dome is supported by 13,000 pieces of curly cumin wood. Stained glass windows filter colorful light into the spacious nave, creating a peaceful atmosphere for visitors to admire the religious art and sculptures. The ceiling features canvases painted by José Moreno in 1932, and the dome of the transept displays cherubs and evangelists, the work of Lisandro Tirado. Located in the heart of Pereira on the western side of Plaza de Bolívar, the cathedral is surrounded by cafes and shops, making it a convenient and essential stop for tourists. Visitors can attend mass or explore the nearby parks to immerse themselves in the local culture.
