Discover more about Parque Nacional Natural Chingaza

Chingaza National Natural Park, nestled in the Eastern Andes, is a natural and cultural treasure for Colombia. Located northeast of Bogotá, the park spans 11 municipalities across Cundinamarca and Meta, encompassing over 76,000 hectares of high Andean forests and páramo ecosystems. Created in 1977, Chingaza protects vital water resources for the capital and surrounding areas while preserving its unique ecosystems. The park's landscape is dominated by the páramo, a high-altitude tundra characterized by vast meadows, iconic frailejones, and glacial lakes. This landscape creates a unique environment that supports a diverse array of flora and fauna. Chingaza is home to approximately 2,000 plant species, including the endemic Espeletia uribei, one of the world's tallest frailejones. Wildlife includes the Andean bear, white-tailed deer, mountain paca, and various bird species, such as the Andean condor and flame-winged parakeet. Chingaza holds cultural significance, with its mountains holding secrets and thoughts from the Muisca and Guayupe indigenous peoples. The Muisca considered the Siecha lagoons sacred, adding a layer of spiritual importance to the park's natural beauty. Visitors can explore several hiking trails, including the popular Lagunas de Siecha trail, offering a blend of natural scenery and cultural richness. Other trails include Las Plantas del Camino, Lagunas de Buitrago, and Laguna Seca, each showcasing the park's diverse ecosystems. Visiting Chingaza requires advance planning. An entrance request must be filed at least 15 days prior to the visit, and access is limited to authorized locations. While there's no public transportation into the park itself, access is possible via private vehicle through routes from La Calera, Guasca, or Fómeque.
