Driving
From Alamosa, drive east on US Highway 160 for approximately 15 miles until you reach Colorado State Highway 150. Turn north onto CO-150 and continue for about 10.5 miles. Look for the Zapata Falls Recreation Area sign on the right (east) side of the highway. Turn onto the unpaved Zapata Falls Road and drive approximately 3.5 miles to the parking area. The road is gravel and can be bumpy, but most passenger vehicles should be able to make it. Parking is free but can be limited, especially on weekends. Overflow parking is available along the road. There are no fees to access the falls.
Walking
From the parking lot, the trailhead is located at the far end. Follow the well-marked trail for approximately 0.5 miles (0.8 km). The trail gradually inclines and is mostly dirt and rock. Eventually, you will reach Zapata Creek. To see the falls, you must wade through the creek. The water is cold, so be prepared. Walk upstream, carefully navigating the slippery rocks, until you reach the base of the falls. There are no mandatory access fees.
