Zapata Falls is a hidden gem nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Southern Colorado. Unlike typical waterfalls, Zapata Falls is concealed within a narrow rock crevasse, requiring a bit of adventure to reach. The falls are accessible via a short, moderately steep half-mile hike from the trailhead. The trail offers stunning panoramic views of the Great Sand Dunes National Park, the vast San Luis Valley, and the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The hike to Zapata Falls is relatively easy, with a gradual incline. However, the final approach to the falls involves wading through the cold, snow-melt-fed waters of Zapata Creek. The water can be quite cold, even in summer, so wearing water shoes or sandals is recommended. The rocks in the creek can also be slippery, so caution is advised. Despite the chilly wade, the reward is well worth the effort. As you step into the narrow, rocky crevasse, you'll be greeted by the sight and sound of the cascading waterfall. The falls plunge 25 feet into a small pool, creating a refreshing mist and a cool oasis. In winter, the waterfall transforms into a stunning ice sculpture, attracting ice climbers and winter enthusiasts. Zapata Falls is not only a natural wonder but also a site of historical significance. Zebulon Pike and his exploring team camped near South Zapata Creek in January 1807. The waterfall is a unique geological formation, as the water from the creek disappears underground when it reaches the valley.
