Discover more about Maroon Lake Trailhead

Nestled in the heart of the Elk Mountains, the Maroon Lake Trailhead serves as the portal to the breathtaking Maroon Bells Scenic Area. The Maroon Bells, Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak, are distinctive bell-shaped, wine-colored peaks rising over 14,000 feet. This area, part of the White River National Forest and the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, offers a diverse range of natural habitats, from wildflower meadows to alpine tundra. Formed over millions of years through sedimentation, uplift, and glacial erosion, the Maroon Bells' unique geology contributes to their striking appearance. The red color comes from the weathering of hematite, an iron-bearing mineral in the mudstone. Maroon Lake itself was formed by glacial activity and dammed by a landslide. From the trailhead, visitors can enjoy several hiking trails. The easy Maroon Lake Scenic Trail offers stunning reflections of the Bells in the lake's clear waters. More challenging hikes lead to Crater Lake and into the vast wilderness. Backpackers can explore the Four Pass Loop and other overnight routes, with permits required for certain areas. The area's popularity necessitates careful management to protect its fragile environment. A shuttle service operates during peak season to reduce traffic, and reservations are required for both the shuttle and private vehicles. Visitors are encouraged to practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve this natural wonder for future generations.
