Snodgrass Mountain, rising to 11,145 feet, is a beloved hiking and biking destination near Crested Butte, Colorado. Named in honor of Perry Snodgrass, a respected forest ranger , the mountain wasn't officially labeled until 1961. Despite its modest stature compared to neighboring peaks, Snodgrass offers a rich tapestry of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. In the summer, Snodgrass is renowned for its spectacular wildflower displays, painting the meadows in vibrant colors. Hikers and mountain bikers traverse trails winding through aspen groves and open fields. The Snodgrass Trail, a 3.6-mile (one-way) path, provides stunning panoramas of Mount Crested Butte, Whetstone Mountain, and the surrounding Elk Mountains. The trail is popular due to its ease of access and moderate grade. However, the top of the trail has no views. As autumn approaches, the aspen groves transform into a sea of gold, creating a breathtaking spectacle. The mountain's trails become ideal for those seeking a colorful fall hike. In winter, Snodgrass transitions into a snowy playground for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing. Snodgrass Mountain also has a history of complex land ownership and management. In 2015, the Crested Butte Land Trust purchased and conserved 92 acres from Crested Butte Mountain Resort, ensuring the preservation of open space and public trail access.
