The Black Canyon of the Gunnison's story began millions of years ago as the Gunnison River carved through the rock, forming the deep chasm we see today. The canyon walls, some of the oldest exposed rock in the world, are made of Precambrian basalt marbled with pink granite. The canyon is so deep and narrow that very little sunlight penetrates, giving it a dark, foreboding appearance.
