Discover more about Black Canyon of the Gunnison Wilderness

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison Wilderness encompasses 15,599 acres within the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Designated as a wilderness area by Congress, it preserves the land's natural conditions, solitude, and opportunities for primitive recreation. The canyon itself is a geological marvel. Precambrian gneiss, some two billion years old, forms the core of the region. Over eons, the Gunnison River relentlessly eroded this rock, creating a canyon of immense depth and striking narrowness. In places, the river courses more than 2,400 feet below the rim, while the canyon narrows to a mere 40 feet wide at the bottom. The combination of depth, steepness, and narrowness results in a gorge that receives very little sunlight, lending it a dark and foreboding character. While there are no maintained trails into the inner canyon, the determined can attempt a descent via several challenging routes. These routes are not for the faint of heart, involving steep scrambles over loose rock and requiring a high level of fitness and self-reliance. Permits are required for all inner canyon wilderness use. For those who prefer a less strenuous experience, the canyon's rim offers overlooks with breathtaking views of the wilderness. The wilderness is bordered by a dryland forest of piñon and juniper, providing habitat for a variety of wildlife. Black bears, elk, deer, wild turkeys, and bighorn sheep are among the animals that call this area home. The park is also an International Dark Sky Park, offering exceptional stargazing opportunities.
