Discover more about Gunnison Black Canyon Recreational Area

Gunnison Black Canyon Recreational Area is a gateway to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, a natural wonder sculpted by the Gunnison River over millennia. The canyon's immense depth, narrow opening, and resulting shadows give it a foreboding, almost black appearance. Established as a national monument in 1933 and redesignated a national park in 1999, the area protects 14 miles of the canyon's total 48-mile length. The canyon's formation began nearly two billion years ago with the creation of Precambrian gneiss and schist. Subsequent uplift and volcanic activity, followed by the relentless erosive force of the Gunnison River, carved the canyon to its present dramatic form. Visitors can explore the South Rim, which features a visitor center, scenic overlooks, hiking trails, and a campground. The North Rim offers a more remote experience with fewer crowds and longer hiking trails. The East Portal Campground, located in Curecanti National Recreation Area, provides access to fishing and other recreational activities. Popular activities include scenic drives, hiking, rock climbing, and fishing in the Gunnison River, which is designated as Gold Medal Trout Waters. Note that wildfires are burning on both rims of Black Canyon as of July 10, 2025. The park is currently closed and all visitors and staff are being evacuated.
