Driving
The final approach to Bill Moore Lake involves driving from Empire, Colorado. From I-70 West, take exit 232 for US Hwy 40 toward Empire/Granby. Turn right onto US Hwy 40/CR-255, following signs for Empire. Continue through Empire, then turn north onto Park Avenue/North Empire Road. This paved road turns into Forest Road 171.2, an unpaved road leading towards Bill Moore Lake. A high-clearance, 4-wheel drive vehicle is necessary for the remaining steep and rocky 5-mile ascent on Forest Road 183.1. There are dispersed camping spots along the way. Parking is available near the lake. There are no fees for accessing the area or parking. Expect the drive from Empire to the lake to take approximately 1-2 hours due to the challenging road conditions.
