Originally inhabited by the Ute and Arapaho tribes, the area saw its first pioneers in the 1820s, though settlement didn't begin until 1850. The town grew with the construction of the Moffat Tunnel in 1928, a 6-mile long railroad tunnel that facilitated travel to the West Coast.Winter Park officially came into being as a construction camp for the Moffat Tunnel and was first settled in 1923. Known as West Portal, it transformed into a haven for winter sports enthusiasts by 1929. In 1940, the Winter Park ski area was formally opened, and the town was renamed Winter Park to promote the area's winter activities. Today, Winter Park Resort is managed by Intrawest but is still owned by the City and County of Denver, offering diverse terrain for all skill levels across seven territories.Winter Park offers a wide array of activities. In winter, enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, snowshoeing, and tubing. The Winter Park Resort is a major draw, offering slopes for all skill levels.
