Echo Lake Park: A Rocky Mountain Gem

Echo Lake Park, a part of the Denver Mountain Parks system since 1921, is a captivating mountain retreat celebrated for its pristine alpine lake and stunning backdrop of Mount Blue Sky. Located just outside Evergreen in the Colorado Rockies, the park stands out for its accessible natural beauty and striking mountain scenery. The clear waters of Echo Lake mirror the surrounding evergreens and towering peaks, creating a photogenic setting. The park's history is rich, with the Civilian Conservation Corps constructing the stone picnic shelter in the 1930s. Echo Lake Lodge, a rustic-style log structure designed by Denver architect Jacques Benedict, was built in 1926 and served as a rest stop for visitors. The lodge now offers a restaurant and gift shop. Visitors can enjoy various activities, including hiking the accessible trail around the lake, fishing for trout, and picnicking. The park also provides access to backpacking trails into the Mount Evans Wilderness. In winter, the landscape transforms into a snowy retreat for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The park's proximity to the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway, the highest paved road in North America, adds to its appeal, offering a gateway to alpine tundra and panoramic vistas. Echo Lake Park also holds historical significance as a site for cosmic-ray physics experiments conducted between 1935 and 1960. The Echo Lake laboratories and the High-Altitude Laboratory at Mount Evans were designated as a Historic Physics site in 2017.
