Embark on an unforgettable journey along the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway, a 28-mile stretch of road that ascends over 7,000 feet to reach an altitude of 14,130 feet, making it the highest paved road in North America. Located near Idaho Springs, about an hour from Denver, this byway offers a unique opportunity to experience Colorado's majestic alpine environment. As you wind your way up the mountain, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the Continental Divide, pristine alpine lakes, and glacier valleys. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and marmots. The byway is also home to ancient bristlecone pine trees, some of the oldest living organisms on Earth. Several points of interest dot the route, including Echo Lake, a serene mountain lake perfect for a picnic or a short hike. The Mount Goliath Natural Area offers a chance to explore a unique alpine environment and see bristlecone pines that are over 1,600 years old. Summit Lake Park, Denver's highest city park, boasts a stunning alpine lake reflecting the surrounding peaks. At the summit, explore the ruins of the Crest House, once a gift shop and restaurant, and take a short hike to the very top of Mount Blue Sky for unparalleled views. Historically, the byway was conceived as part of Denver's Mountain Parks system, designed to provide access to the mountains for Denver residents. Originally named Mount Evans, the mountain was renamed Mount Blue Sky in 2023 to honor the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes. The Arapaho people were known as the Blue Sky People, and the Cheyenne have an annual renewal of life ceremony called Blue Sky. **Important Note:** The Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway is currently closed for construction and is scheduled to reopen in May 2026. Access to the summit is available via hiking trails only during the closure.
