Discover more about First Baptist Church of Denver

Located in the heart of Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood, the First Baptist Church of Denver is more than just a place of worship; it's a historical landmark with a legacy of community engagement. Founded in 1864, just six years after Denver's establishment, the church has evolved into a welcoming and affirming congregation that embraces diversity. The current church building, completed in 1938, is a stunning example of Georgian Revival architecture, designed by the esteemed Denver architect G. Meredith Musick. Its features include a 160-foot tower, a grand portico with granite Corinthian columns, and Indiana limestone trim. The impressive granite columns, quarried in Lyons, Colorado, were meticulously turned and polished on-site, making them the largest of their kind in the state at the time. The church's architecture also includes main entrance doors with limestone pediments and pilasters at the corners of the building. Throughout its history, First Baptist Church has been a center for social justice and community support. Reflecting this commitment, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a sermon from its pulpit on April 16, 1962. Today, the church continues to serve the community through various initiatives, including providing space for non-profits, hosting a community fridge, and supporting the Colorado Safe Parking Initiative. First Baptist Church has a Grand Aeolian-Skinner organ, the largest between Chicago and Salt Lake City.
