Monarch Lake: A Tranquil Alpine Escape

Monarch Lake, also known as Monarch Reservoir, is a picturesque destination located east of Granby in Grand County, Colorado. Situated at 8,340 feet above sea level, this 140-acre lake is one of Colorado's five "Great Lakes" within the Arapaho National Recreation Area. The lake's maximum depth reaches approximately 15 feet. Originally created in the early 1900s to support the local logging industry, Monarch Lake was formed by damming Roaring Fork Creek. The water was used to transport logs via flumes to a sawmill downstream in the now-submerged town of Monarch. Relics of this logging history, including a boiler and the flume, can still be seen near the lake's edge. Today, the United States Forest Service owns the earthen dam, which was completed in 1929 and is used for recreation and fishing. Monarch Lake is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The popular Monarch Lake Loop trail, an easy 4-mile path, encircles the lake, winding through shady forests and across cool creeks. It provides access to the Indian Peaks Wilderness and the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. Visitors can enjoy non-motorized boating, including kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding, in the lake's tranquil waters. Anglers can cast a line for various trout species, and wildlife watchers may spot deer, moose, and native birds along the shoreline. While there are no campgrounds directly on Monarch Lake's shore, the nearby Arapaho Bay Campground offers waterfront campsites. The Monarch Lake Trailhead provides access to backcountry camping in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, requiring permits for overnight stays between June 1 and September 15.
