Discover more about Bear Lake Trailhead

The Bear Lake Trailhead, situated at 9,475 feet (2,888 m) above sea level, is a bustling hub within Rocky Mountain National Park, offering access to the iconic Bear Lake and numerous other scenic destinations. The trailhead itself is located at the front of the Bear Lake parking area, next to the ranger station. From here, a short walk leads to the shores of Bear Lake, where visitors are greeted with picturesque views of Hallett Peak and the Continental Divide. The area is renowned for its accessibility and the variety of trails it offers, ranging from the easy 0.7-mile Bear Lake Loop to more strenuous hikes to destinations like Dream Lake, Emerald Lake, and Flattop Mountain. The Bear Lake Loop is a nature trail that circles the subalpine lake, passing through forests of spruce, fir, lodgepole pine, and aspen. Historically, the area has been shaped by events such as the 1900 "Big Fire," which swept through Glacier Gorge and led to the prominence of aspen trees in the area. In the early 20th century, a youth camp called the Bear Lake Trail School provided outdoor instruction to boys. Today, the Bear Lake Trailhead remains one of the most popular destinations in Rocky Mountain National Park, attracting visitors year-round. In the summer, the park's free shuttle bus helps manage traffic congestion, while in the winter, the frozen lake and snow-covered trails offer opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
