Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Driving
From I-70 west of Idaho Springs, take Exit 232 for US Hwy 40 toward Empire/Granby. Follow US 40 for a couple of miles to Empire. In Empire, turn north onto Main Street/North Empire Road. This becomes a county road, then Forest Road 171.2. A 4-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicle is highly recommended due to the rocky and steep road conditions. There is a parking area near the lake. Be aware that the road may not be snow-free until late June or July. Parking is free.
Hiking
For a more challenging approach, consider hiking from the Fall River Road area via the Continental Divide Trail. From I-70, take the St. Marys/Alice exit. Follow Fall River Road for about 6.5 miles and turn left onto Road 274. Passenger cars can drive the first mile. Park where appropriate and hike up the road to find the Continental Divide Trail crossing on your left. Follow the CDT, keeping in mind this is a strenuous hike with significant elevation gain. There are no fees for hiking.
