Discover more about United States Mint

The Denver Mint, located in the heart of Denver, has been a vital part of the city and the nation's economy since it began striking coins on February 1, 1906. However, the history of the Denver Mint goes back to the early 1860s when gold was discovered in Colorado. The firm of Clark, Gruber & Co. set up a private mint in Denver, and from 1860 to 1862, they produced approximately $594,000 worth of coins. In April 1863, the U.S. Treasury purchased the building, assaying, and minting equipment. After Congress approved the establishment of a branch mint in Denver, construction began in 1897. The Denver Mint moved to its current building on West Colfax Avenue in 1904, a structure modeled after the Medici-Riccardi Palace in Florence, Italy. Today, the Denver Mint primarily produces circulation coinage, but has also struck commemorative coins and produces coin dies for other mints. Visitors can take a free guided tour of the Denver Mint to witness the coin-making process and learn about the history of the Mint. Tickets are available on the same day of the tour at the ticket booth. During the tour, visitors can see coins being made and learn about the history of currency in the United States. The gift shop offers a variety of items for purchase, including coin sets, commemorative coins, and souvenirs.
