Located in Denver, the Colorado State Capitol Building is more than just a government building; it's a living museum of Colorado history and a symbol of the state's identity. Designed by architect Elijah E. Myers, its architecture intentionally mirrors that of the U.S. Capitol, featuring a neoclassical design in the shape of a Greek cross. Construction spanned from 1886 to 1901, utilizing granite from Gunnison, Colorado for the exterior.The interior showcases rare Colorado Rose Onyx, a pink stone found near Beulah, and Yule Marble from Marble, Colorado, adorning the floors. Many believe they can see images in the marble, including likenesses of George Washington and Molly Brown. Stained glass windows depict important figures and events in Colorado's history. The gold dome, first gilded in 1908 with gold from Colorado miners, commemorates the state's Gold Rush.Visitors can take free guided tours to learn about the building's history, art, and architecture. Tours include a climb to the dome observation area (accessible by stairs only), offering panoramic views of Denver and the Rocky Mountains. A point of interest is the mile-high marker on the building's west steps, signifying Denver's elevation of one mile above sea level. The main entrance hall rises 180 feet to the top of the dome, approximately the height of an 18-story building.The Capitol houses the Colorado General Assembly, the offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and the Department of the Treasury.
