Miramont Castle Museum, nestled in the Manitou Springs Historic District, offers a captivating glimpse into Victorian life against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. Built in 1895 by French-born Catholic priest Father Jean Baptist Francolon, the castle is a remarkable architectural fusion, incorporating nine different styles, from English Tudor to Byzantine. Francolon, inspired by his travels with his diplomat father, created a unique residence featuring medieval battlements, Gothic doorways, and elements of Romanesque, Flemish, Elizabethan, Venetian, and Moorish design. The castle's 14,000 square feet encompass over 40 rooms, each with its own distinct character. After Francolon's departure in 1900, the Sisters of Mercy used the castle as a sanitarium, later as a boarding house and vacation home. Today, the Manitou Springs Historical Society owns and operates the museum, preserving the castle's architectural integrity and providing educational experiences. Visitors can take self-guided tours through the castle's four floors, exploring exhibits that showcase Victorian artifacts, local history, and even a collection of war memorabilia. The Queen's Parlour Tea Room offers a delightful Victorian tea experience, with reservations required. The castle also features Victorian gardens, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Miramont Castle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is rumored to be haunted, adding an extra layer of intrigue to its rich history. The castle is also home to the Manitou Springs Firefighters Museum.
