Discover more about Wheeler Town Clock - Manitou Springs

The Wheeler Town Clock stands as a testament to Manitou Springs' rich history and enduring charm. Donated in 1889 by Jerome B. Wheeler, a prominent figure in the town's development, the clock was originally intended to commemorate the opening of the Manitou Mineral Water Bottling Company. Wheeler, a former Macy's Department Store president and Aspen mining magnate, sought to capitalize on the town's famed mineral waters. The clock itself was cast by the J. L. Mott Iron Works of Trenton, New Jersey, and it originally functioned as a fountain. Water flowed from stylized dolphin heads into bowls, even providing a lower level for dogs to drink from. Topping the clock is a statue of a Greek goddess. While for many years believed to be Hygeia, the goddess of health, it is actually Hebe, the daughter of Zeus and Hera, and keeper of the elixir of eternal youth. Her presence was meant to represent the healing properties of Manitou's mineral water. Over the years, the clock has undergone several restorations. The original clock faces with bronze Roman numerals were replaced in the late 1940s with electric clocks, which were again replaced in 1976. In 1991, the Historic Preservation Commission and the Colorado Centennial Chapter #100 of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors restored the clock to its original splendor, recreating stained glass faces from historic photos and recasting missing dolphin heads. Today, the Wheeler Town Clock remains a central hub for visitors and locals alike. Framed by the Rocky Mountains, the park offers seating areas for relaxation and is surrounded by unique boutiques, eateries, and art galleries. It operates daily from 6 AM to 9 PM, providing ample opportunity to capture the perfect photo or simply enjoy the atmosphere.
