Discover more about Aspen Mountain Ski Resort

Aspen Mountain, often called Ajax by locals, stands proudly above the town of Aspen, Colorado, as the original cornerstone of the Aspen-Snowmass ski resorts. Founded in 1946 by Walter Paepcke, it quickly became a world-renowned destination for skiers seeking challenging terrain and a sophisticated mountain experience. Unlike other resorts in the area, Aspen Mountain caters primarily to intermediate and advanced skiers, with a distinct absence of beginner slopes. The mountain's history is deeply intertwined with the story of Aspen itself, which transformed from a silver mining town to a cultural and recreational hub. The first ski race was held on Aspen Mountain in 1937. The 10th Mountain Division trained nearby during World War II, recognizing Aspen's potential as a ski destination. The installation of Lift-1 in 1946, once the world's longest chairlift, marked the beginning of Aspen's journey to becoming a premier ski resort. Today, Aspen Mountain offers 673 acres of skiable terrain, with 76 runs accessed by nine lifts. The Silver Queen Gondola transports visitors to the summit at 11,212 feet, providing access to breathtaking views and a variety of activities. While skiing and snowboarding remain the main draws, Aspen Mountain also offers snowshoeing tours, and mountaintop dining. In the summer, Aspen Mountain transforms into a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The Silver Queen Gondola operates for sightseeing, providing access to hiking trails, disc golf, and mountaintop dining at the Sundeck restaurant. Special events like mountaintop yoga and bluegrass concerts add to the summer appeal. Aspen Mountain continues to evolve while preserving its unique character. Recent additions, such as the new Hero's terrain, have expanded the mountain's offerings, ensuring that it remains a top destination for skiers and snowboarders for years to come.
