Discover more about Crested Butte Land Trust

The Crested Butte Land Trust (CBLT) stands as a testament to community dedication in preserving the natural landscapes of the Gunnison Valley. Established in 1991, the land trust emerged from a shared vision among local residents to safeguard the valley's pristine beauty from increasing development pressures. Since then, the CBLT has been instrumental in protecting over 6,000 acres of land through conservation easements and acquisitions. The CBLT focuses on four primary conservation values: wildlife, recreation, ranching, and scenic views. They collaborate with willing landowners, local ranchers, government entities, and other non-profits to achieve their goals. Their work includes preserving critical wildlife corridors, maintaining open spaces for recreational activities like hiking and biking, and supporting the region's ranching heritage. Visitors can explore many conserved properties, including the popular Lower Loop trail system, which offers accessible trails for hiking and biking through stunning wildflower meadows and aspen stands. The Slate River Valley, another area championed by the Land Trust, provides recreational opportunities and vital riparian habitat. The Land Trust also hosts events and volunteer opportunities, allowing the community and visitors to actively participate in conservation efforts. The Crested Butte Land Trust operates from its office on 3rd Street in Crested Butte, serving as a hub for conservation initiatives and community engagement.
