Crested Butte Mountain Resort: A Wildly Steep Skiing Experience

Experience steep terrain, stunning views, and a vibrant mountain culture at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, the birthplace of extreme skiing.

4.7

Crested Butte Mountain Resort, located in the Elk Mountain Range of Southwest Colorado, is a legendary destination known for its steep terrain and breathtaking views. Opening in 1961, the resort quickly gained a reputation as a haven for extreme skiers and snowboarders, earning its nickname as the "birthplace of freeskiing". Originally a mining supply town, Crested Butte transformed into a ski destination thanks to the vision of Dick Eflin and Fred Rice, who purchased ranchland and obtained permits to build the resort. Despite initial struggles, Crested Butte's unique character and challenging slopes attracted a dedicated following. Today, the resort boasts 1,547 acres of skiable terrain, with a mix of beginner-friendly slopes and some of the most advanced in-bounds runs in North America. Crested Butte is more than just a ski resort; it's a vibrant community with a rich history and a deep love for the mountains. The town of Crested Butte, a National Historic District, offers a charming glimpse into Colorado's past, with colorful buildings, local shops, and a lively après-ski scene. In the summer, the resort transforms into a mountain biking paradise, with lift-served trails and stunning wildflower displays. Whether you're seeking adrenaline-pumping adventure or a peaceful mountain getaway, Crested Butte Mountain Resort promises an unforgettable experience.
