Sweitzer Lake State Park: An Oasis in Delta, Colorado

Sweitzer Lake State Park is a popular day-use destination located just south of Delta, Colorado. Established in 1960, the park encompasses 210 acres, featuring a 137-acre reservoir created by damming Dry Creek. Morgan Sweitzer, a local land donor, envisioned the park as a recreational space for the community, and today it continues to fulfill that purpose. The park is known for its diverse range of water activities. Power boating, jet skiing, water skiing, sailing, canoeing, and paddle boarding are all popular on the lake. A boat ramp is located on the west end of the lake for easy access. Swimming is permitted in a designated swim area. Anglers can enjoy catch-and-release fishing for catfish, bluegill, green sunfish, and carp. Beyond the water, Sweitzer Lake State Park offers picnic areas with shelters, fire rings, and lake views. A 1.5-mile trail loops around the lake, providing opportunities for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Birdwatchers will appreciate the diverse avian species that inhabit the park, with approximately 179 species having been spotted. The park's varied habitats, including shrublands, wetlands, and woodlands, support a wide array of wildlife. Visitors should note that Sweitzer Lake State Park is a day-use only park; camping is not permitted. However, nearby Crawford State Park offers camping facilities.
