Discover more about Denver Museum of Nature & Science

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science (DMNS) has been a cultural cornerstone in Denver for over a century. Officially incorporated as the Colorado Museum of Natural History in 1900, its origins can be traced back to Edwin Carter, a miner who amassed a significant collection of Colorado fauna in the late 19th century. The museum opened its doors in City Park in 1908, quickly becoming a popular destination for residents and tourists alike. Today, DMNS spans over 716,000 square feet and houses more than a million objects, including natural history and anthropological materials, as well as archival and library resources. The museum's permanent exhibits cover a wide array of topics, including Prehistoric Journey, Space Odyssey, Expedition Health, Egyptian Mummies, Gems & Minerals, and North American Indian Cultures. The museum is also known for its wildlife dioramas, which were created in the mid-20th century. In addition to its permanent exhibits, DMNS hosts temporary exhibitions, planetarium shows at the Gates Planetarium, and films at the Infinity Theater. The museum also offers a variety of educational programs for school groups, adults, teachers, and young children. DMNS is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is a Smithsonian Institution affiliate.
